Happy Anniversary to Me: A Recap of One of the Greatest Years of my Life – by Devyn Devine
Happy anniversary, happy anniversary, happy anniversary, hap—-py anniversary! We have all heard the song, and it is sung by many for a variety of reasons. This month we are singing it to me – Devyn Devine, as June marks my one year anniversary in the adult film industry.
We all know why I started, and how thanks to a guy named Vinnie in East Orange, New Jersey (who said to me something along the lines of, “I bet you in three months you won’t be doing this.” Ah-hum – well, good call on that one!) I became one of the top all natural big boob girls in the industry. This has been an exciting year for me, so I would like to recap the public accomplishments and talk about some of the private struggles I have had, but more than anything, I want you to walk away from this month’s column with pride in knowing that you have played a part in my success, and I recognize that!
The Beginning: June, July, and August 2005:
I totaled my car and almost lost my life on my way to Alaska. After posting a resume on SexyJobs.com, I was contacted by a slew of individuals wanting me to do boy/girl work (what’s that?). Vinnie discovers me and within 5 days I am in Miami shooting for BigNaturals.com, BigTitsRoundAsses.com, and Score. These were the websites that put me on the map. I never intended to stay in porn. I just needed to make money quickly after the ex-communication from my church (AINews column January 2006).
After Miami, I traveled up to Jersey to shoot with the maniac from BigTitsCurvyAsses. Now to date, I haven’t mentioned this man’s name because I didn’t want to give him publicity. However, I have changed my mind, and now I will tell you, his name is Glenn. He runs IncrediPass.com, and no girl should ever shoot for him, no matter how desperate for money they are! Sell blood, pawn a TV, but don’t let this man near your body! He throat gagged me until I puked and continued to record it, and I recently found out he slapped the crap out of a former friend of mine during their shoot and left her and another girl stranded on the East Coast! I shot this my second week of porn, and I can honestly say that I am grateful for developing a thick skin early. Thank you Glenn, I will continue to take you down every chance I get.
After returning home, I continued to get calls, including one from now AVN hall of famer – Rodney Moore. We made a great movie and I still continue to shoot for him to this day. Rodney and I shot a movie entitled “Boobs for Brains” and submitted it to the Stranger – a weekly paper in Seattle that was hosting an amateur porn contest. Together, we took 4th place. I am now on the box cover of this movie which will be released the week after next!
In August, my porn travels took me to Europe, a place I never dreamed I would ever go. I had shot in London, Wales, and Paris. I forged a relationship with a man whom I call my “Paris Boyfriend,” a man named Celian who will be teaming up with me on a huge opportunity for Gent magazine. To me, the accomplishments aren’t in the dollar amounts I made for the months I worked, but rather in the relationships I cultivated with individuals who still remain in my life. Business is business, sure, but in my world, business must equal relationships with people I can trust. Another relationship I value is my dear friend Johnny Poker from BigBoobDreams.com. Seeing as Johnny lives in Vancouver which is practically my backyard, we get to shoot together a lot. I respect his work and the fact that he is not a creepy guy!
Summer is over: September, October, November, and December 2005:
Have you noticed something? One might ask, “Devyn, when did you hit Los Angeles?” Well, hopefully it is clear – I shot in 4 other countries and in other parts of the U.S. before I braved LA. Can you blame me? I am not exactly the LA cookie cutter. However, I finally believed it was time to go, so I got me an agent and went! But picking the agent was a hard task. I finally went with Tim from Naughty Talent.
Now coming to LA in my mind was a sign to show that I had arrived. But I couldn’t be more off if I tried. I know that I have publicly gone on KSEX and spoke about this, so therefore I feel obligated to mention it in my writing.
Tim passed me off to an agent named Ben Fisher.
This is the bottom of the barrel, scum of the industry parasite who preys on new girls for his own advancement. This man tried to talk me into doing anal, promised me $1,200, the box cover, and an award at AVN. Furthermore, since Tim said I could book my own work and neglected to tell Ben, Ben became all pissed off, refused to drive me to those shoots even though I would pay commission on them, and somehow, I was kicked out of the house I was staying at. Tim promised to pick me up and take me to the hotel so that I could not miss a shoot I had that evening. He never came.
Finally I called the person I was going to be shooting with – my best friend in the industry and my editor – Steve Nelson who rescued me from being in a strange city with no transportation, all by myself. Steve picked me up, I left $300 on the table for commission owed, and I left. I saw Tim twice after that. We never spoke about what happened. As for Ben, like with Glenn, my skin got thicker, and I will blast you every single chance I get! However, I wouldn’t change a thing because I met Steve and an insta-bond was formed! It was on that trip that Steve gave me the opportunity to become a columnist for AINews.com. He also brought me to KSEX where I met Layla Jade and the KSEX crew. I began to come down once a month to LA to shoot. We went to parties where I met my friends Lynn LeMay, James Bartholet, Tee Real, Kitty Lee, and Lori Lust. I hooked up with Pam Peaks. I was starting to make a name for myself… Such a name that one day I received a phone all from a strange man named Howard Brown…
During this time, my column was going great, interviews were coming in and I was discovering new talent and trying my hand as a mentor and agent. I continued to promote promote promote by going on KSEX and meeting Wankus. That was huge for me.
I became the co-host of a little Internet radio show called Howard Brown Live. All of a sudden, the show began to blow up as did my career. I was shooting for companies like Big Top, Platinum X, Television 69, Filmco, RodneyVision, and even Score a second time in less than a year!
Vinnie took pictures of me and submitted to Gent Magazine. Photo Editor Anton Fury didn’t buy the layout. I was crushed. To me, the nudie magazine business was built like a hierarchy. There was Playboy, then Penthouse, then Hustler, and then Gent. I know my place and my limitations. Gent was the best I could hope for and once in December, I was given my shot. I quickly planned a trip to the East Coast in January thanks to a phone call from well known and world renowned dominatrix Mistress Rhiannon.
Six months in and I was sitting on top of the world. I began working on a website, and I even started on the feature circuit by going to Phoenix in December. Seriously, my calendar for the month of December had me in Los Angles, Miami, Phoenix, and Vancouver, BC. Honestly, though, I wasn’t prepared for what would happen next.
The New Year: Winter and Spring 2006:
January kicked off with the Adult Video News Convention in Las Vegas. How does one prepare for that? It was a whirl-wind of excitement. Steve Nelson took me as his guest and introduced me to everyone in the know porn world. These are just some of the cool ass people I met: Ron Jeremy (He grabbed my boob and started sucking – I guess that’s his way of saying Hello!), Taylor Wane, McKenzie Lee, Ashton Moore, Jesse Jane, Mr. Marcus, Brandy Talore, Bill Margold, Summer Haze, Ashley Evans, Kelly Madison, Stormy Daniels, and really too many for me to mention here.
We were on VIP for the Wicked Pictures party, and because of my upcoming shoot with Spice studios, we were on VIP for the Playboy TV party. That was the day I met my great girlfriend Robin Crickett who is one of the associate producers for Playboy. Due to Lynn’s E Channel hook up, we also were on VIP for the Tera Patrick party. By the end of the 4 days, my feet felt like ground hamburger, but it was worth it. The two weeks after the AVN, I shot for great companies like Twisted Pink, Kick Ass Pictures, Madness Pictures, Taylor Wane Productions, and Spice Studios.
Doing the bi-coastal thing, I flew to NYC to shoot for Gent Magazine, Inner Freak Productions, and film a 29 guy gangbang in honor of my upcoming 29th birthday in February. Once February rolled around, I found myself in Phoenix again, then back to LA, and over to Miami where I shot with my new friend Samantha 38G, and soon to be new business partner Clint Works from Sensational Video.
When I was in Phoenix, I was doing a show when my website went live. What an incredible feeling! I was also asked to open up the 2006 FOXE awards in LA. It was here that I met Tera Patrick.
Professionally I was great, but my career began taking its toll on my personal life. Traveling meant more and more time away from my daughter. It was hard to explain why I had to be gone so much. Furthermore, we began dealing with legal issues that surrounded my little girl and her grandfather. Nothing in my life was safe. School was taking a turn for the worse because I simply am not an online student. Different relationships began to strain and eventually would break because of the stress and pressure I was under to be on top, or at least as on top as I could be. I finally felt like I was out of resources as far as shooting and I got another agent. I will not go into the disaster that was, but I will say that you should always keep your guard up and beware of who you trust. I took the month of April and most of May off to recoup and regroup and make a plan for the summer.
One year to Date – What has happened in June:
I think I can honestly say that June has been the greatest month for Devyn Devine! My biggest accomplishment was being offered a monthly column in Gent Magazine. It’s guaranteed to be in the magazine 13 times a year. That is huge!
I was able to have my own booth at the Exotic Erotic Ball this year along with my co-host Howard Brown. I was asked to sign at the RodneyVision booth at LA Erotica this year which is another super huge thing for me! While in LA, I will be co-host Taylor Wane’s KSEX radio show with her as well as appearing on Night Calls with Christy Canyon and Ginger Lynn. However, I will say that the biggest accomplishment I have had this year, thanks to Mistress Rhiannon was the opportunity to appear on the Howard Stern show which is heard on Sirius Satellite and seen on in demand TV.
This year has been massive. Other things have happened too, like being published in print for the first time ever for the Texas Adult Guide, being featured in the AVN Magazine for Fresh Off the Bus, and also winning the Hottest Girl in Porn Contest for my week (week 12), but without the fans, Devyn would have just been another fly by night girl in the industry looking to make a quick couple of bucks here and there.
I think I learned something too this year. I learned what it meant to be family (thanks Steve and Lynn) and I learned that we can’t all be cookie cutters, and who wants too? While I may never truly saturate the LA market, and I may never win an award at AVN, I am excited at the prospects of whom I am and who I am continually evolving into. Someone once told me that they don’t like who Devyn is, they don’t find Devyn sexy, and they are not impress by the concept of Devyn. Well, Devyn is my alter ego, and will continue to produce great gonzo porn that sends the message to women that they don’t need to be the cookie cutter image to enjoy their sexuality. Maybe Devyn isn’t for everyone, but she doesn’t have to be. I am who I am for my fans. I love you guys. Thank you for sticking with me this year and in years to come. Please send your comments to Devyn @ AINews.com
**This column is dedicated to Kenny and Holly – it won’t have to be like this for much longer – I love you both!**
