(SILVER SPRING, MD) — Area adult entertainment industry professionals and consumers joined forces this month to protect their First and Fourth Amendment and other legal rights. New state-level Free Speech Coalition chapters for the District of Columbia, Maryland, and Virginia met for a kickoff membership meeting at the Columbia, Maryland, Hilton on April 3, 2001.
Fifty members and supporters of the adult entertainment industry gathered to learn about the benefits of joining forces to protect their First and Fourth Amendment and other legal rights. Presentations were made by Free Speech Coalition national Executive Director William Lyon, FSC Legislative Affairs Director Kat Sunlove, and Silver Spring, Maryland, First Amendment Lawyer and founding FSC chapter member Jonathan Katz. Represented at the FSC chapter kickoff meeting were retailers, distributors, consumers, cabaret and theater owners, and the Internet business. Mark Kernes, national legal editor of Adult Video News, covered the event.
Founding chapter member Jon Katz said, "The enthusiasm at the Kickoff meeting was wonderful. We truly have strength in numbers." Jon’s law partner and co-founding member, Jay Marks, added: "Our turnout tonight proves that the First Amendment is alive and well."The FSC chapters’ next step will be an organizing meeting on May 8, 2001, in Columbia, Maryland, where the members will select their leadership, And start pursuing needed political and lobbying action. The organization plans to hold a lobbying training session in June 2001 with FSC Legislative Affairs Director Kat Sunlove. The Free Speech Coalition is the only organization that supports and fights for all applications of the First and Fourth Amendments. FSC’s mission is to educate, lobby and support litigation to further the understanding and acceptance of the meaning of the First and Fourth Amendments in general and as they regard adult materials in particular.
