(LOS ANGELES, CA) — When Kim Airs, proprietrix of female sexuality boutique Grand Opening! [store locations in Boston and Los Angeles], was approached by several of her customers who expressed interest in seeing their sexuality exposed on the big screen, she decided to organize an evening of amateur porn produced by the people who frequented her store.
The event, "You Oughta be in Pictures", was a smash success, selling out a 600-seat Boston-area theatre four years in a row. When HBO caught wind of it and decided to record the event for an episode of their popular show Real sex, Airs welcomed them inside the whole process. HBO was so impressed that they transformed the segment into a one-hour special entitled Porn 101: Exxtra Credit set to air September 13, 2003, right after Sex and the City!
"They filmed participants making their videos so they could see what everyone did for preparation, and then the producers captured the participants reactions to seeing themselves up on the big screen," Airs recalls. But who came up with the idea to have an amateur porn film fest in the first place?
"Me," she says. "I had several customers at Grand Opening! mention to me that their fantasy was to see themselves having sex up on the big screen. Well, since you can’t exactly walk into your local movie theatre and ask ’em to pop in your homemade video, I thought that I could arrange something like this. When a few people ask me about the same thing, I recognized a trend and realized that for all those people who are brave enough to verbalize their fantasy to me, there must be hundreds who don’t. So I knew I was on to something."
Airs is a part of the entire process, watching all of the submissions, choosing what goes into the final product, and hosts the show herself. The film fest only runs two nights, giving the attendees a small window of opportunity to see themselves and their neighbors in action on the big screen. But what’s to keep Airs from copying the videos and selling them herself?
"I destroy the tapes at the end of each show. When it’s over, it’s over," Airs says. "During the one that HBO covered, the cinder blocks crumbled when I went to smash up the final copies of the video with a sledgehammer!"
