Adult Producers See Growth in Non-Traditional Retail Outlets
Los Angeles Producers of adult DVDs report increasing sales from non-traditional retail outlets, including music and electronic gaming stores.
Robbie Conley, Vivid Interactive spokesman, says they have noticed that since the introduction of DVD-capable game consoles such as Sony’s PlayStation 2 and Microsoft’s Xbox, sales of their product in Virgin Megastores and in Tower Records have grown "dramatically."
Robert Plarski, vice president of Digital Sin, New Sensation’s DVD arm, says he’s also noticed a "huge increase" in sales from those retailers as well. Plarski adds that Fry’s Electronics has placed orders on par with traditional adult distributors.
He adds, "When we went to the show in Vegas, brokers [for a mainstream music retailer] told us they were coming out specifically to talk to DVD manufacturers and no VHS manufacturers& that they were trying to get away from VHS."
Conley says their sales demographics have followed those of game and music buyers. He adds that prior to the introduction of the consoles, sales of their titles were limited to traditional video retailers, both adult and mainstream outlets.
Sales of the company’s higher-end discs with higher interactivity tend to be the better sellers to gamers, and Conley credits that to customers of that market being used to having more options. "If you look at the Raw and Wave titles, which are the lower-end titles which don’t have as many options on them and compare them to the Vivid titles, which would include your features and Virtual Blowjob discs, [the Vivid] titles do much better."
Unlike Conley, however, Plarski is not so sure if the trend can be primarily traced to the proliferation of game consoles that can double as DVD players, though he adds it doesn’t hurt. He sees the growth stemming from adult entertainment’s growing acceptance within the mainstream culture and because it sells.
"If it didn’t sell they wouldn’t carry it," he says.
But Plarski does see interactive titles, such as the company’s My Plaything series, selling better than traditional adult titles on DVD. Like Conley, he credits the added value of interactivity for the stronger sales performance. "Because there’s added value for that interactivity [a retailer] can mark it up to make more profit for that floor space," he says.
