(AMHERST, NY) — In 1986, in the Reagan Administration, Ed Meese’s Justice Department raided the North Carolina offices of Adam & Eve, a mail order company selling erotica and contraceptives. Different, of course, from forcing Oregonians to change their laws about the right to die, or Californians their right to use marijuana to ease pain. Or conducting secret military trials of alleged terrorists.

But all are attacks on civil liberties.

The Government vs. Erotica: The Siege of Adam & Eve (Prometheus Books, 2001) is the story of how the owner of one small business refused to let big government destroy his company – or our civil liberties. Written by Philip D. Harvey, the company’s owner, the book has been nominated by the Intellectual Freedom Roundtable of the ALA as the best book on intellectual freedom published in the last 2 years.

And it has gotten rave reviews:

"A compelling narrative. " NY Law Journal

"An excellent anecdotal way to get a handle on the ongoing pornography debate." Publishers Weekly

"A chilling tale. " Reason magazine

"A must read…A powerful indictment of those who would force their narrow view of the world on a free people." Caspar Star Tribune

"Valuable. A comprehensive introduction to the issues surrounding sexuality in the contemporary United States." Winston-Salem Journal

"Readers concerned about free speech will enjoy this surprisingly involving tale. " Booklist

"A clear and concise look into the inner workings of a modern day persecution…. A significant chronicle in the evolution of First Amendment political debate. " Wisconsin Lawyer

Harvey is also the author of Let Every Child Be Wanted, How Social Marketing is Revolutionizing Contraceptive Use Around the World, now in its 2nd printing, about which President Jimmy Carter said, "contributes in a lively and interesting way to our understanding of foreign assistance programs, particularly those for family planning and AIDS prevention."
