(BRIGHTON, UK) — The reasons for the adult entertainment industry’s success in technology development are being examined in the world’s first ever academic business-based research project.

The world’s first ever academic research project into the business structure of the adult entertainment industry is currently underway, conducted by Georgina Voss, University of Sussex. The project focuses on the industry’s lead in innovating, developing and using new technologies, with a specific focus on the digital technologies implemented by online adult companies.

Voss says: "It has long been acknowledged that the adult entertainment industry is far ahead of other industries with regard to innovating new technologies, but the factors for its success in doing so have, to date, never been examined academically.

"This is very important and ground breaking work into a huge industry which has so far been unexamined by business and management. By looking at the accomplishment of the adult entertainment industry in an unbiased and analytical manner it should be possible to provide lessons about successfully developing new technologies, both for the adult industry and other sectors."

Voss will be conducting the Los Angeles-based element of the fieldwork for six months from February 2005.

Voss, a graduate of the University of Oxford and the University of Sussex, has previously conducted several consultancy projects about technology development and management in association with universities, government departments and private firms. She is based at the Science and Technology Policy Research Unit, University of Sussex as a DPhil student, and is funded by the UK Economics and Social Research Council.
