Construction Sign Promised Furniture Store – Neighbors of a building going up along TV Highway in Aloha are feeling deceived.
They thought that a new building going up would be a furniture store, according to the sign out front, which said "Epic Furnishings." But Thursday morning they learned that the mysterious structure will contain an adult video store, according to KOIN 6 News.
For months, residents of the Reedville neighborhood have watched the building rise along TV Highway in a strip that is zoned retail-commercial. The sign was a diversion — and a lie, the news station says.
Behind the darkened glass are video shelves, individual viewing booths with doors and small rooms for watching live performances.
The office building next door houses a travel agency, a real estate firm and a chiropractor’s office.
Washington County was also taken by surprise and has only recently been notifying schools, churches and day cares of the coming adult business.
"I’m raising a family here. I have three teenagers and … they’re an unwelcome neighbor," local resident Sue Green says.
County planners say that the builder is complying with the law. Neighbors will voice their opposition at a community meeting Nov. 2.
