(LOS ANGELES, CA) — Vivid-Ed director Tristan Taormino won two awards at the 5th Annual Feminist Porn Awards (FPA) in Toronto on April 9, 2010.
Her Vivid-Ed movie ”The Expert Guide to Anal Pleasure for Men” won for Hottest Sex Education Film. In addition, she was honored for her decade in the adult film industry with the prestigious Trailblazer Award for Lifetime Achievement in Feminist Porn.
Canadian columnist and author Josie Vogels presented the Trailblazer Award. ”In an industry with an incredibly high turnover rate, it is remarkable when someone can sustain a ten year career while simultaneously continuing to stay true to her intentions and expand the scope and impact of feminist porn. A trailblazer makes way for others to follow and opens up new opportunities for people attempting to forge their own path through similar avenues. In feminist pornography, one name evokes an understanding of art, of advocacy, of education and of quality – Tristan Taormino,” said Vogels in her introduction.
”I am honored and humbled to receive two Feminist Porn Awards. To be acknowledged by my peers is such an amazing feeling. I want to thank Steven and Marci Hirsch and everyone at Vivid Entertainment, Nina Hartley and Ernest Greene for their friendship and support, my amazing production crew and editors and all the fantastic performers I’ve worked with over the years,” said Taormino in accepting the award.
Taormino has won previous FPA ”Emma” awards (named for feminist godmother Emma Goldman) in 2006, 2007 and 2008.
The first Feminist Porn Awards were produced by retailer Good for her in 2006. They have expanded each year to the recent event in Toronto, which welcomed both the adult industry and the general public to further the debate around feminism and porn, pleasure and politics. The pre-ceremony screening on April 8th drew nearly 500 to the Bloor Cinema and the Berkeley Church was filled to capacity for the awards show.
Organizers of the awards observe that the past five years have seen many improvements in the adult industry as it pertains to women. Perhaps the most important of these is the explosion of female filmmakers looking to change the way that sex is presented on screen.
The growth of female directors has been accompanied by a growth in female viewers. Women are watching porn, talking about porn, buying porn and sharing porn with their partners in record numbers. Since Good for her launched the Feminist Porn Awards in 2006, the retailer’s DVD sales have more than quadrupled.
