(ATHENS, GREECE) — Greece’s licensed prostitutes have warned that foreign sex-slave competitors would rush to exploit the August Olympic Games because of unrealistic zoning laws restricting legal brothels.
The Movement of Greek Prostitutes (KEGE) said laws banning brothels in Athens from operating within 200 metres of buildings like schools, churches and libraries made it nearly impossible for them to ply their trade except on the streets,
“What will happen is prostitutes are going to flood the streets again, topless and on heels. What a great image for the Olympics,” KEGE chief Dimitra Kanelopoulou told a news conference on Thursday.
Greece legalised prostitution in 1999 with health and other certificates enforced, but at the same time tightened regulations on where brothels could operate.
Kanelopoulou said with legal brothels restricted, “Mafia” organisations foresaw a booming street business involving unlicensed prostitutes mainly from neighbouring Balkan nations.
“Thousands of women sex slaves will be imported for the Olympics as part of the flourishing Mafia prostitute trafficking rings that have been going on for years,” Kanelopoulou said.
KEGE estimates illegal prostitutes number more than 60,000 across Greece at present against 7,000 registered.
