Clear Channel Communications has called for an industry task force to develop clear indecency standards for media outlets like television, radio, cable and satellite. This call for clear standards comes on the heels of a proposed $755,000 fine for airing a sexually explicit radio show on four stations in Florida.
The Federal Communications Commission, whose chairman Michael Powell, son of Secretary of State Colin Powell, has been involved in some very controversial activity of late, including allowing greater conglomeration of media outlets and the proposal to increase fines for indecent programming. While believing we should maintain a firm grip on explicit programming that could be accessed by children, I see both problems and opportunity. The rules have never been clear and it is time to remove the veil of secrecy as to what is obscene, what is indecent and what is acceptable in our society.
The way the current regulations are written radio and over-the-air television outlets can not show or air obscene material and they can not air indecent material between 6 a.m. And 10 p.m. Gee, I kind of remember a few shows on over-the-air television last night that showed bodies being riddled with bullets. Where is Chairman Powell? I don’t want to get off track, but would you rather have your children see murder or sex on television? Think about it! It has been proven over and over that children re-live what they see on TV. Is there any better reason why the murder rate is so high in the United States? I am not advocating sex on television for children, but it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to see that there is a real double standard when it comes to protecting children.
While I have not seen or heard the programs that caused the fine I am strongly supporting Clear Channel Communications call for an industry task force to develop clear indecency standards. I am also urging the Free Speech Coalition and other adult industry outlets to become involved and demand a seat on this task force. While the media has portrayed those of us in the adult industry as mindless, sex perverts, the truth is that some of the most brilliant people in the entertainment and media business are in the adult industry.
