(ADDIS ABABA, ETHIOPIA) — Ethiopian police said on Wednesday they had arrested about 200 revelers and topless dancers in a crackdown on illegal night spots in Addis Ababa, which authorities fear are a breeding ground for HIV/AIDS.
"At a time when the nation is suffering from the ravages of the killer disease HIV/AIDS, it is outrageous and disgusting that businessmen should allow such spots, which help youths practice unsafe sex, to operate," police said in a statement.
Police said the dancers, whose average age was 15, were former students trying to make a living from topless dancing.
The statement said most of the people rounded up Tuesday night were spectators and were released after questioning. Ten dancers and night club owners were remanded in custody until they appear in court on charges of indecent exposure.
