(WASHINGTON, DC) — The Children’s Internet Protection Act was signed into law by President Clinton today. The American Family Association hailed this event and thanked Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) and Rep. Chip Pickering (R-MS) for sponsoring the bill.

“The McCain-Pickering bill provides an effective solution to the growing problem of Internet pornography in schools and public libraries,” said Patrick Trueman, director of governmental affairs for American Family Association. “Caring parents who wish to shield their children from sexually-exploitive material should be able to trust that schools and public libraries are on their side,” he said. “Yet, because of the influence of the American Library Association and their allies, which oppose filtering of any material, even illegal pornography, to children, such parents find they fighting a losing battle,” he added. The Children’s Internet Protection Act will go a long way in that battle by requiring that obscenity (hard-core pornography) and child pornography to be blocked when anyone, even an adult, uses a school or library computer. It also requires that other material inappropriate for minors be blocked when children access the Internet.

Trueman cautioned parents and pro-family activists to be vigilant to assure that schools and libraries in their local area comply with the Act and choose an effective filtering system.
