(LATHRUP VILLAGE, MI) — Lover’s Lane & Co. officials say their videos explain sex, not exploit it. But city leaders disagree and want to hold a public hearing for residents to determine whether the store’s merchandise is educational or obscene.
Denied a business license, Lover’s Lane is suing the city in federal court to open a shop here. The suit will be heard Dec. 1 in U.S. District Court in Detroit.
The company sells lingerie, videos, novelty items and books and isn’t an adult bookstore or pornographic video store, store officials said. The city doesn’t make a distinction between educational and pornographic or obscene materials, said Allan S. Rubin, an attorney for Lover’s Lane. “They sell educational videos about sex, nothing like Debbie Does Dallas. The city over-generalizes and one category covers everything that has anything to do with sex.”
