LONDON (Reuters) – Lap dancers in Liverpool in northwest England Tuesday won the right to remove even their skimpy G-strings and dance completely nude.
But the city’s lap dancing clubs must prove in six months that they can regulate themselves according to national decency laws and meet licensing demands if the G-strings are to stay off.
Police in Merseyside had opposed the move by the city’s lap dancing clubs, but Liverpool’s local council — councils in Britain have discretionary powers to rule on whether dancers can reveal all — voted in favor of the nude dancers.
“We want to go along with other areas like Manchester where dancers don’t take everything off,” a Merseyside police spokeswoman said, declining to comment when asked if the force feared it would trigger more crimes in clubs.
