(TORONTO, ONTARIO) — Wank Punter will be appearing live at the famed Whisky a Go Go for a showcase performance on Thursday, August 10th. This is your chance to see what everyone’s been raving about! Not only are they funny as hell in song, but to experience Wank Punter for all it can be, you have to see them Live!
This is not your typical rock n’ roll band. Granted, it isn’t the first time sex and rock has walked the aisle of unholy matrimony as they are rather obvious bedfellows. But, where the bands that have influenced these raucous rockers have left off, Wank Punter has dutifully taken the baton and raised the gritty, prurient quotient substantially.
Much like their forebearers, it has not come without controversy and public scorn. But then, it’s been a while since a rock n’ roll band came along and scared the daylights out of parents. Boomers have grown up with Marvin Gaye’s “Sexual Healing”, Alice Cooper. And Kiss. They’ve survived through Gangsta Rap and its criminal culture and have even acquiesced to the point where Tipper Gore has become a mere footnote in the annals of pop culture.
But it would appear that through all that, what they seemed the least prepared for was a porn rock band that blatantly displayed and showcased their hardcore sex industry roots.
Wank Punter had yet to set foot in Los Angeles when a boycott at the famed Whisky a Go Go bubbled up and threatened to cancel their showcase appearance on August 10th.
According to Celina Denkins, executive entertainment coordinator of the club, there were complaints regarding the prurient nature of the group’s image, lyrical content, and the very fact that the band openly claims to perform with female exotic entertainers. The Whisky, being an all-ages club, clearly had a dilemma on their hands.
Management was split on what to do. In the end, they decided to explain the situation to the complainants in the hope of a compromise. Many acts scheduled to appear ahead of the band on the day of Wank Punter’s appearance were duly forewarned and the parents of the bands appearing during the all-ages portion of the day were instructed to get their kids out immediately after the last performance.
Naturally, the fathers of the kids all staunchly agreed to comply. Oddly enough, even though many fathers were upset over the matter, a bunch had responded by stating: “You bet the kids will be out. But we’re staying! This, I’ve gotta see.”
At the end of the day when the band was finally informed of the situation, they were asked if they would mind headlining the evening as the main event.
With results like that, the band should be praying for a picket protest to form outside the club on the day of their appearance. Who knows? With controversial attention like that, they just might end up performing at the Hollywood Bowl next time around!
