If you’ve been wondering why there hasn’t been a new lesbian romantic comedy in the last several years, you’re not alone — so watch for a new offering from Passion Fruit Video, “How To Pick Up Girls: A Guide for the Dating Impaired” that just fits the bill! The “mockumentary” (in the style of Christopher Guest) has tongue firmly planted in cheek as the story follows four single lesbians looking for love, in spite of some horrifically funny bad date stories from their friends. With a soundtrack by Lilith Fair artist Rachael Sage, as well as Cindy Pruitt, Astrogin and Sylvia Trench, the movie hits the mark and clearly shows it’s understanding of lesbian culture in a way that few films about lesbians have done before, and the humor is right on target.
The storyline revolves around two shy, coming-out singles named Kate and Angie — both paralyzed with fear about making the first move, and their two best friends Porsche and Sunny, who are — shall we say — experienced cruisers. The movie is the perfect send-up of being a struggling single in the year 2004. When Sunny tries to explain to Angie how to use Gaydar to pick out girls at a dance and defines “butch snackcake”, when Kate answers a personal ad from a newly “divorced” wacko girl, when Angie and Kate finally hook up for coffee and have that first awkward date, you’ll be right there with them, rooting for true love in spite of all the odds!
Especially noteworthy is the cast of all lesbian and bisexual women, including the voluptuous Kathryn MacGregor as the flaming f Mysteria Black as the loopy, self-deprecating girl who’s new to Beautiful Rhiannon Arivon, with her mane of red hair and Southern manners plays Angie with the right mix of enthusiasm and trepidation. The cast also features some outstanding improvisational comedians in Terri Hudson, Cori Frels, Dreamtime and many others.
The script by Alpha and Kathryn MacGregor is funny and poignant, and the sex scenes are hotter than blazes as well as visually beautiful. Check out the very funny out-takes in the end credits, they’re worth the price of admission alone.
