(NORTH HOLLYWOOD, CA) — Maverick director David Aaron Clark says that his new release Asia Noir 3: Asia Insatiable is his most ambitious and innovative video to date in a year of “personally ground-breaking” work for Video Team, where he has been a contract director since last Spring.
“Asia Insatiable is my first full-fledged feature since Angel. I was in denial most of the way through shooting that I was doing anything but another installment in the Asia Noir series, which is basically interconnected vignettes featuring Asian women copulating with Black men,” says Clark.
“Though I had a vague story in mind at the start, I refused to work from a script,” explains the AVN Award-winning screenwriter. “I had certain images that I wanted to create, and also used my usual technique of letting the personalities of my cast inspire their on-screen personas, but this time coached them into improvising within the idea of the storyline. I ‘wrote’ the show on set and in the editing room, and with the close collaboration of some of my favorite actors, including Mr. Marcus and Loni.”
The teaming up of Asia Noir series star Marcus with Filipina sexual dynamo Loni resulted in not only Loni’s first scene with a black performer but also a unique, innovative scene that veers between sexual ferocity and tenderness – and still advances the storyline.
Oh yeah, the storyline. Clark describes it this way:
“A young girl (Lolita Young) who is in a state of autism is the only survivor of a suspicious fire that engulfed the psychiatric clinic where she was a patient. She gets shuffled to a new sanitarium, where head psychiatrist Marcus is digging into her past even as his staff starts meeting calamitous ends. As it turns out, the girl is capable of projecting physical manifestations of her personality into the real world, where they seduce and lure the people around her to their own personal fates.”
The three personalities are portrayed by Loni, Charmaine Starr and Jade-blue Eclipse, the latter of whom is Clark’s most unique and longest-tenured leading lady. A bodybuilder, martial artist and contortionist who studies at circus school in San Francisco, the Nagasaki-born, tattooed beauty has also been featured in other Clark projects.
“Jade-blue is one of my best friends in the world and probably my most reliable muse and collaborator,” says Clark. The DVD edition of Asia Noir 3 includes a previously unreleased segment from a 1998 documentary on San Francisco strippers directed by Clark that showcases Jade-blue’s fire-eating and contortionist skills.
The DVD also includes a remixed version of the score to Asia Noir 3, composed by Clark, whose former band False Virgins broke up in 1992, shortly after the release of their second album. The band was produced by Lee Ranaldo, guitarist for Sonic Youth.
“This is the first time I’ve taken music seriously in years,” former guitarist and vocalist Clark avers. “I had a blast scoring this movie, paying little tributes to Ry Cooder, Howard Shore, Ennio Moriccone and a ton of others.”
Clark also pays unusual tribute to one of his all-time favorite non-porn directors in the storyline for Asia Insatiable: “The whole thing is a sort of unofficial sequel to David Cronenberg’s the Brood, although of course visually I’m riffing on the Ring a lot.”
As with all his titles, Clark edits his own work, though this time he shares videography duties with Glen Baren – the team that earned a nomination in that category at last year’s AVN Awards for their work on Video Team’s No Man’s Land 4: HOUSEofASIANATRIX.com. Also featured in the AN3 cast are newcomer Kylie Rey, as well as Sledge Hammer, Sylvio and Video Team contract performer Tyler Knight.
Clark concludes:
“Though I look at this video and at this point just see ways I want to make a better show next time, I’m proud to have come this far, and wouldn’t be able to do it without the trust and support of the great staff at Video Team.”
