The official Memorial Day holiday was created by proclamation several years after the American Civil War by Union General John Logan, national commander of the Grand Army of the Republic, a Union veterans group. It was first observed on May 30, 1868, when flowers were placed on the graves of Union and Confederate soldiers at Arlington National Cemetery. After World War I, it was decided that all American military personnel killed in service to their country be honored on the holiday.
In tribute to our fallen soldiers, and as we acknowledge the sacrifice of those who serve and risk their lives today, FlyntDigital offices will be closed Memorial Day, Monday May 30th. As always, we will be e-mail accessible for any serious issues that may arise, with administrative concerns being addressed upon staff return on Tuesday, May 31st.
Let no ravages of time testify to the present or to the coming generations that we have forgotten as a people the cost of a free and undivided republic. General John Alexander Logan, Commander-in-Chief, Grand Army of the Republic, May 5, 1868.
