Benjamin Franklin, during an experiment with electricity, sent the shock through his own body instead of the turkey he had decided to eat. Although embarrassed that the fowl had the better of him, Franklin still believed the turkey be chosen as the Unites States national bird and not the bald eagle. It’s a good thing the other founding fathers did not agree. How would it look for their patriotic descendants to be gulping down tens of millions of its national symbol in an annual holiday rite?
There is no need today for us to electrocute or otherwise dispatch any live turkeys as we prepare for Thanksgiving dinner, but our offices will be closed on Thursday, November 27 and Friday, November 28 as we gather with loved ones to celebrate the national holiday. We will be e-mail accessible for any serious issues that may arise, but administrative concerns will be addressed upon staff return on Monday, December 1.
May all of us, especially our servicemen and women in far away lands, have a safe and happy holiday weekend.
