(CHATSWORTH, CA) — Retails sales and rentals of adult video features exceeded $4 billion and a record 11,303 hard core sex titles were released in 2002, according to AVN magazine, the leading authority on erotic entertainment.
The annual sales and rental statistics published in the January AVN indicates continued growth of the adult industry at the retail level. AVN says that adult video products accounted for 29.1 percent of sales in all video stores and adult bookstores that carry at least some adult products, compared with 28.7 percent in 2001 and 28.4 percent in 2000 and 20.5 percent in 1988, the first year statistics were collected by AVN, which is a part of the AVN Media Network and is available online at AdultVideoNews.com.
AVN says the number of hardcore VHS titles released in 2002 is the highest ever, topping the 2001 figure of 10,800 and nearly 10 times as many as the 1,250 produced in 1988. There were are record 8.01 million adult VHS and DVD rentals in 2002, exceeding the previous year’s volume of 759 million and nearly double the 410 million rentals in 1991, the first year figures were collected.
The adult video rental and sales volume of $4.04 billion in 2002 was the highest in recent years, still below the record $4.2 billion of 1997, but more than triple the $1.6 billion recorded in 1992, the first year the statistics were gathered. The figures do not include mail order or Internet sales.
