Reflections on the Second Annual Silverlake Film Festival.
Greetings again my frisky and faithful readers, it is I, Antonia reporting on the Silverlake Film Festival. Yes, if you are wondering what I am doing in this section and not my own column, it is because my editor (the stud-muffin Mr. Steve Nelson) released me from my cage onto an unsuspecting public. Consequently I was able to wander around and rub shoulders with the Glitteratii, the Cognoscenti, and the Notorious who attended the event.
This Poly-Cultural Celluloid Happening features an eclectic roster of films that celebrates and embraces the alternative lifestyles of so many of you sexxxy libidinous readers out there. The roster included a number of Films and Documentaries that were Oh-So-Relevant to the to the Jizz-Bizz that I felt compelled to attend.
My first foray into this hedonistic soup began on Friday evening when I attended the premier screening of ¨The Fluffer¨. I had the opportunity to be seated next to Cultural Icon Mr. Kenneth Anger, who regaled me with sooooo much industry gossip (both porn and mainstream). I only wish I could repeat it here! But alas, none of us wants to get sued by the boyfriend of P[redacted]. So on that note lets review the movie. ¨The Fluffer¨ is a cautionary tale about a naïve young man obsessed by a gay-for-pay Porn Star. I guess you could call it ¨Death in Venice¨ meets ¨Boogie Nights¨. It starred among others, Deborah Harry, and the always-twisted Taylor Negron. There were also cameos by Ron Jeremy and Chi-Chi LaRue. It was a well-written script with strong performances and the memorable line: ¨To be in the Adult Film Business you have to be an Adult¨. This film is scheduled for general release in November of this year so keep an eye out. For more information and publicity contact amy@firstrunfeatures.com
The following evening yours truly was dispatched, sans Mr. Anger to view two documentaries that were part of the ¨UP YOUR SKIRT-Naked Feminism Exposed¨ series curated by the Doyenne of coolness Candi Guterres. This series dares to ask the question: Can women who take their clothes off for a living still be feminists? My retort is ¨Was there ever a doubt in your mind that the answer is YES?¨ In attendance that evening were Madison the Mermaid Herself Darryl Hannah, and the always lovely Porn Goddess Juli Ashton.
First was ¨Strip Notes¨ a videodoc by actress turned director Darryl Hannah. In it, she researches a character by going under ground to various LA titty bars. And yes, ladies and gentlemen you can actually see her do a pole dance!! Calling Dr. Stanivslasky! We have a case of Method overload! For more information about ¨Strip Notes¨ contact Meredith St. John at 310-480-0535.
Finally, there was a screening of what could only be called the Crown Jewel of the ¨Up your Skirt¨ program. This would be ¨Porn Stars: Life and Times In The Adult Industry¨. Prior to the screening I had the opportunity to have a one on one with Director Doug Jacobson. He describes how he quietly documented the thoughts and opinions of a plethora of Jizz-Bizz luminaries. The result is an on the ball, in your face account of the Adult Industry as never before seen on film. It manages to be funny, raunchy, and entertaining, but always respectful of the subject matter. ¨Porn Stars¨ features appearances by Brittany Andrews, Juli Ashton, Anna Malle, Asia Carrera and a very introspective, Randy West. This documentary is a must see for all fans of the largest industry in the San Fernando Valley. For more information go to imigel@aol.com
Sunday morning showcased the ¨NAKED DISCUSSION PANEL¨. Frankly, I was a bit disappointed to find out that this was not a clothing optional event. Oh well, hope springs eternal. Never the less the panel of experts managed to deliver a lively debate on feminism and porn. The Legendary Nina Hartley, and the charmingly irreverent Dr. Carol Queen talked about everything from masturbation to how the tragic events of 9/11 will impact our civil liberties. My favorite moment was Dr. Queen’s disclosure that the best selling hetero video released by her company, “Good Vibrations”, is titled ¨Bend over Boyfriend¨. And I thought *I* was the only one who uttered those words! (Note to Boyfriend: You see honey, it’s OK, lots of couples do it!). After such a stimulating weekend I could hardly wait to get to my PowerBook and share this experience with all of my Sexxxy and Horney readers out there in the hopes that they will support the Films and Documentaries reviewed in this article.
Till next time,
Love Always,
Antonia
