Sanjay Burman, owner of Burman Books, writes, “What we had planned was that since Dr. Ruth and Sue Johanson had retired, a line of cool, younger sex/relationship advice books written by adult stars would be something people might want to take tips from. If you are motivated, have a business mind, then our deal works well. If you are lazy or lack vision, we are not the company for you.”
Below is a rebuttal to an old complaint published on AINews:
In any situation you are not sure about whether or not to believe someone, slandering them may not be the best solution. Sometimes it’s as simple as asking for more details until you understand.
The publishing industry works like any entertainment industry facet. You can make a movie, cut a CD or print a book for small dollars. Very true. You can shop your product around until a bigger company decides to make it for you thereby giving you a small upfront fee and making the end product, thereby splitting the profits after recoupment of all of their expenses. And then there is us.
We take on all the expenses, but we need the author to get behind the book to be able to sell, and we need the author to make some money to be happy. Therefore we designed a new way of working. We will get you the editor, etc. We will get the book done and get it to stores. The author does in fact take on their own stock of books 3 months before we put ours in stores. The author gets the book at 50% of the cover price and sells it for the cover price. That’s a 50% profit per book! I don’t know of anywhere else you can make a profit like that and all you have to do is sell to your fan base on your site, at your conventions or while on tour. I have seen some actresses selling a picture for $20, a book for half that cost is going to outsell a picture. It’s a value add. Or, buy the book and get a free picture with the star/author!
If you think outside of the box, the possibilities are endless. Then, when we go into stores, we share with you equally on profit. So on one hand, you just doubled your money by yourself, and on the other hand you are making more money through us if you push the book and send people to the stores to buy it.
How are we wrong or “scamming” the Industry? By miscommunication and jumping to a conclusion, you miss on what could potentially be a great thing for you. All of our authors do the deal and those who are active and push, make money. Those who sit back and put it all on us, make nothing because there are no sales.
So I ask again, how are we bad people for making a deal that everyone wins by? To “scam” people only makes it hard to function. I had a vision of a sex/relationship advice series. This leads me back to my initial statement, if you aren’t sure, don’t jump to a judgement, Ask.
