Sunday Spotlight: The Politics of Sex in Cinema

A panel discussion on the difficulties for depicting real sex in American cinema will follow the screening with the main actors, Shari Solanis and Keller Wortham, director Philippe Diaz, and Bill Margold, veteran adult entertainer and advocate as well as the film reviewer for the LA Express. Panel will be moderated by David Geffner, a journalist and filmmaker, who has written about censorship and sexuality in cinema for Moviemaker Magazine.

Sex, politics and American culture are mixed into a combustible combination in Now & Later. Angela (Shari Solanis) is an illegal Latina immigrant living in Los Angeles who stumbles across Bill (Keller Wortham), a disgraced banker on the run. She takes him in and through passionate sex, soul-searching conversations ranging from politics to philosophy, and other worldly pleasures, the affair will ultimately change Bill’s life.
The film was conceived by Philippe Diaz, a native Frenchman, in reaction to Americans’ penchant for violence in our movies and our culture and our censoring of anything involving sex. Familiar with Wilhelm Reich’s notion that a sexually repressed society turns into a violent one, Diaz makes an unabashedly sexual yet cerebral film that challenges the perception that sex in media is harmful.
