(LOS ANGELES, CA) — We are pleased to announce the Downtown Film Festival-Los Angeles’ Sunday Spotlight: The Politics of Sex in Cinema, an honest and forthright panel discussion on how sex is dealt with in American media, following the world premiere of Now & Later, a feature film directed by Cinema Libre Studio’s Philippe Diaz.
Panelists to include: Now & Later director, Philippe Diaz (the Empire in Africa, the End of Poverty? And founder of Cinema Libre Studio); Now & Later stars: Shari Solanis and Keller Wortham; and Bill Margold, veteran adult entertainer and advocate as well as the film reviewer for the LA Express. The panel discussion will be moderated by David Geffner, a journalist and filmmaker, who has written about censorship and sexuality in cinema for Moviemaker Magazine.
What: Downtown Film Festival- LA, Sunday Spotlight: The Politics of Sex in Cinema Following the world festival premiere of Now & Later, a cerebral yet sexy story of an illegal Latina immigrant living in Los Angeles who takes in a disgraced banker and teaches him about life, this unique panel will focus on the topic of ”Sex in Cinema,” including the history of sex in film with particular regard to the perception of the American audience and media that gratuitous violence in movies is acceptable while images of sex are something to be embarrassed about if not censored altogether.
An addendum to this topic is the notion put forth by Austrian-American psychiatrist and psychoanalyst Dr. Wilhelm Reich (1897-1957) that a sexually repressed society will eventually turn into a physically violent one, and the relevance of such a notion in relation to the censorship of sex in cinema.

About Now & Later:
Sex, politics and American culture are a combustible mix in Now & Later when Angela (Shari Solanis), an illegal Latina immigrant living in Los Angeles stumbles across Bill (Keller Wortham), a disgraced banker on the run. She takes him in and through passionate sex, soul-searching conversations ranging from politics to philosophy, and other worldly pleasures, the affair will ultimately change Bill’s life.
The film was conceived by director Diaz, a native Frenchman, in reaction to Americans’ penchant for violence in our movies and our culture and our censoring of anything involving sex. Familiar with Dr. Wilhelm Reich’s philosophy that a sexually repressed society turns into a violent one, Diaz makes an unabashedly sexual yet cerebral film that challenges the perception that sex in media is harmful.
