Living in the 21st Century: Perceptive New Stories From MSNBC Focus On the Role of Female Executives in Contemporary Adult Entertainment
(LOS ANGELES, CA) — As the mainstream press seemingly never tires of pointing out, the adult entertainment industry often serves as something of an oracle when it comes to foreshadowing or predicting which technological systems eventually prevail, both in the marketplace of consumers and the marketplace of ideas.
But the media is often less charitable when it comes to showing the industry’s progressive stance in the realm of executive leadership. Thankfully, popular cable news channel MSNBC has made a bold move toward addressing this situation with two new well-written and well researched articles by author Brian Alexander.
The first presents an overview of the increasingly important role of female executives in the growth and diversity of 21st century adult entertainment, while the second presents a perceptive look at the life and career achievements of 24 year industry veteran and Wicked Pictures VP of Special Projects Joy King.
The first story, Women On Top: Female Execs Rise in Porn Biz (www.MSNBC.msn.com/id/28022805/) is a fair and balanced look at King and other women who have established themselves as integral assets to the world of adult entertainment in their careers as producers, sales people, web developers, company owners and film directors.
King’s observations not only frame the piece, but essentially provide its thesis, as encapsulated with her opening statement – ”There is still this perception that the porn industry is all run by men, and not very nice men. It is not widely known how many women executives there are in this industry.”
Alexander’s companion piece, an Inside Look At a Female Porn Executive’s Life (www.MSNBC.msn.com/id/28023031/), pushes King even further front and center, delivering a candid, introspective, and often poignant look at the impact her career has had on her personal life.
While both stories contain some bittersweet observations (the latter article, in particular, pulls no punches when addressing the occasional stigmas and double standards King has encountered), Joy stands by both pieces as written.
”I am very proud of both MSNBC articles. They aren’t press releases or ‘fluff’ pieces. They are legitimate human interest stories that provide an honest perspective on where I have been, and where we are today as an industry.”
Reflecting on the human dimension of both articles, she’s quick to conclude, ”Even with the hurdles I have faced, I am enjoying my life as an adult entertainment executive. Especially as an executive for Wicked Pictures.”
In further testimony to the influence of her two and a half decade career in adult, King will be moderating a seminar next month at the 2009 AVN Adult Entertainment Expo that will explore the roles of women in the industry, both as business executives and consumers. The seminar, titled Girls, Girls, Girls: The Growing Power of Women in Adult Entertainment, will be presented on Friday January 9, from 11 a.m. To 1:00 p.m. AEE will take place at the Sands Expo Center in Las Vegas, Nevada.
In a formal statement discussing the upcoming AEE seminar, King noted, ”Women play an increasingly important role in the growth and diversity of this industry. From business owners to producers, marketing executives to publicists, their contribution continues to legitimize the adult entertainment industry and break the outdated stereotypes that exist about it.”
