(LOS ANGELES, CA) — Former Olympic sprinter and 1986 Chicago Bears Superbowl champion Willie Gault merely wanted a discount on a bulk purchase of the popular Screaming O rings and ended up embroiled in a controversy over a street race with Screaming O President Justin Ross.
It seems that the former athlete wanted to make a wholesale purchase for friends who have retail outlets and was surprisingly challenged to a race to receive the discount by Screaming O partner Justin Ross. Ross, a former athlete himself who played professional basketball in Italy, set up the race in front of the Screaming O headquarters in Torrance.
The race finished closely with the disputes starting almost immediately over the winner and the now infamous ”false start”. A picture has recently surfaced indicating that Ross may have indeed gotten off to an early start.
”The picture clearly shows he jumped the gun,” said Gault, but Ross was having none of it. ”I’m not sure where that picture came from, but I think it was doctored,” Ross responded defiantly.
Screaming O partner, Keith Caggiano, commented on the controversy. ”Talk about bizarre, it all seems like a Seinfeld episode to me. If only Coach Bevilacqua was here to settle this.”
In the end it was declared that Willie did indeed win the race and Ross, still out of breath, shook hands and agreed to honor the discount. ”I’m just happy to be able to get the products because I know a lot of people that are screaming for them -but these guys are just kooky,” exclaimed Gault with a smile.
Ross declined to comment about whether or not racing or competing for discounts was going to be a regular practice for the Screaming O and just said, ”Koretsky, you’re next!” Ross said they are just trying to keep up with the spirit of the Olympics.
