To All the Friends of Rudy Sutton 1923 – 2006
Dear Friends,
You know, I’ve probably written hundreds of Press Releases over the years, but none of them had me searching for the right words as much as this notice.
Rudy Sutton, my Father, and the CEO of VCX for over 20 years, has left us after a long illness. I know I will never be the same, nor will the multitudes he touched in both his public and private life.
He was born Reuben Sutnovsky in March 1923 to Russian Jewish immigrants, and served in the Pacific during World War II, enlisting in 1942 and receiving his honorable discharge in 1946.
He didn’t enter the adult business for 40 years, when after retiring from his successful manufacturing business, he moved south from San Francisco to North Hollywood to help his cousin, my uncle Norm Arno, with his floundering porn empire.
Norm was incarcerated, suffered the murder of his two children, and died grief stricken. After infusing a lot of his own capital to bail out the troubled VCX, Rudy finally had the company emerging from bankruptcy in 1989. Today, because of his sage guidance, VCX is the most successful classic adult company in the business.
He first became diagnosed with COPD, the mother of all emphysema, in 1999. He was hospitalized at least twice a year for extended periods since 2002, and entered the hospital for the last time on October 27th of this year. Ever the consummate deal-maker, weak scrawls on ICU notepads instructed me to register websites, call specific past-due accounts, even buy stock! But his strength had so diminished, that last night, at exactly 5:00 Pm, the same moment his two younger sons had boarded a jet to Vegas to say goodbye, he died in my arms. Even with the knowledge that his death was eminent, the weak ECG waveform that slowly flattened to a line caught me by surprise and I was taken over by emotion.
He was always a gentleman, loved to travel, made friends everywhere he went, and will be sorely missed by everyone who knew him.
