June 9-12 marked the annual CyberNet Expo, a business to business convention hosted by YnotMasters.com. The seventh year running, the Expo was a veritable “Who’s Who” in the adult internet biz. Unlike InterNext or other huge events, CyberNet Expo has a more laid back feel. At once smaller yet larger than many other conventions. These are the types of places that deals are made. Attending this event as a panelist was a treat for me, a rare opportunity to address my contemporaries.
The last day of the event wrapped up with a Webmaster Safari trip to the San Diego Zoo. I got to unwind from the seminars and relax before heading back to the hotel and jumping in to what I thought was going to be a casual evening of hanging out with friends, but quickly turned in to one of the best business conversations I have had in years!
Blowing off a party at an overly crowded club, Aly from AlyTV.com and Brent from Python and I sat down for a few drinks and chit chat. With Aly’s extensive background in marketing and traffic, she had a perspective of this industry that centered around numbers. Brent specializes in sales and is Python’s Director of New Business Development, so he sees things as conversion ratios. As I am both model and webmaster of my own website, my expertise lies in content production and management. With each of us having spoken on the panel related to our areas of knowledge, it was an incredible opportunity to share what we knew.
Too often in the on the internet side of this industry, a question which starts with, “How do I…?” is met with an answer along the lines of, “Join my program…” I firmly believe that knowledge is meant to be shared, that is what drives the quest to gain more of it. There is nothing to be gained by hoarding it and I finally sat down with others who shared my view.
It was amazing to me to see how many things each of us considered ‘common sense’ that the other had never even thought of. It was also amazing to see how each of us had concerns and information that over-lapped in to the next persons arena. Imagine this: Three people have pieces to a puzzle, no one is completely sure what the finished puzzle will look like, only that they have parts to it.
Traditionally, each person would have held tightly to their share, never wanting to let others see what they are holding. Saturday night, however, each of us laid our pieces out on the table, allowing each other to pick up and inspect them. The amount of information traded back and forth was phenomenal, but paled in comparison to the fact that three people, each regarded as the “Cream of the Crop” in their perspective fields mingled their thoughts, plans and goals.
As ‘content’, it is rare for me to find people who take my business ideas seriously. Oh Hell! It is rare to find people who do not just stare at my tits while I am speaking! This was one of those occasions!
The outcome? I have learned how to better market my website, how to better analyze traffic and how to refine my business model. Brent has learned the basics of amateur cam websites, from creating content, to streaming media to which traffic is a match for my niche. Aly has learned the same, as well as allowing me to have a bit of input on AlyTV.com.
AlyTV is a weekly, hour-long online video show initially targeted to an audience of webmasters who work in the online adult entertainment industry. It is an informal, fun discussion among interesting people about the adult industry and anything else that comes to mind. There are champagne, snacks and dogs on set, and an open door policy for certain recurring guests (and dogs!) The show format is a Windows Media interface with chat. What sets AlyTV.com apart from many of the other webcast radio shows is their penchant for getting guests with opposing views on current events. Instead of listening to an hour long commercial, listeners/viewers can actively debate industry news. Not only does this keep the show interesting, it allows for the exchange of information. (If you have read this far then you know I am big on that!)
I plan on visiting Aly at her Hollywood studio and helping better network her cams and microphones, since I have an extensive background in that! As we were talking that fateful evening, Aly decided to branch her target market out a bit and include the average web surfer. I thought the idea of allowing the average porn lover a chance to see a bit of what goes on ‘behind the scenes’ was a brilliant one! I wonder how many will get lost in our terminology…
I realize I have digressed a bit, wandered off the path some, but I know you will forgive me! I am a big-tittied brunette with no gag reflex! Who can stay angry? 😉
