(SAN DIEGO, CA) — Local doctor lets patients ‘test-drive’ breast implants. Getting size right is hardest part of procedure, according to surgeon.
Breast-enhancement surgery is the most popular cosmetic procedure performed in Southern California, but many patients complain afterward that they didn’t get the right size or shape.
One San Diego surgeon hopes to change all that. Getting the size right is the hardest part of the surgery, said La Jolla plastic surgeon Lori Saltz. In order to help her patient be certain they’re getting the right size of implants, she lets them test-drive them before they go under the knife.
Mara Denning said she was not as nervous as she might have been, had she not been able to size up her implants beforehand.
Saltz gave Denning a breast exam, then her patient was given a special bra that is made to hold different sizes of implants. Denning tested them out by wearing them under a tight T-shirt.
“We have a large choice, from very small to very large,” said Saltz. “There are probably 15 different sizes of implants.”
While the patients may try on many different sizes, Saltz said she never had a woman downsize.
“Nobody’s ever said, ‘I want it smaller,’ or, ‘I don’t want them now,’ ” said Saltz. “If anything, they say, ‘Oh, I want to be bigger.’ “
Pictures of the patient both with and without the implants are taken, then they’re printed out and posted on a private Web site for comparison.
“They felt big at first, but five minutes later, I’m like, ‘I want the bigger ones,'” said Denning.
