(CHATSWORTH, CA) — In light of the HIV outbreak in the adult industry, producer and director Seymore Butts has announced that when the performing moratorium lifts as of June 8th, all Seymore Butts Home Movies productions will be condom mandatory. This marks the first time in adult industry history that a gonzo company has mandated condom use in all productions.
“I think it’s my responsibility to minimize the risk for performers that appear in my movies to the best of my efforts,” Butts says. “Considering recent events it seems to me that mandating my performers wear condoms for vaginal and anal penetration scenes minimizes the risk to a great extent.”
Though he has faced criticism from industry insiders who suggest “Condom Only” movies don’t sell, Butts is optimistic that with the raised public awareness about this particular outbreak, consumers will soften their view against condom use in favor of keeping the talent safe and healthy.
“The funny thing is that everyone claims that we have to uphold this veil of fantasy in porn, but the truth is gonzo is based in reality,” notes Butts. “Condoms are a reality in most everyone’s everyday lives, so gonzo seems to be the natural place to promote and explore the use of condoms. That being said, only time will tell how the marketplace will respond, so if I’m out of business in six months then I guess the people who claim consumers only buy movies without condoms will be right. But I’m betting that they’re wrong.”
And don’t think that this means Butts’ movies are going to become shadows of their former selves.
“Just because I’m asking a guy to put a condom on his cock doesn’t mean that I’m not going to have a girl sticking her tongue up his ass. So if anyone thinks my movies are going to be sanitized they’re crazy, but they’re not going to be crazy to be crazy,” he adds.
Pure Play Media Inc. CEO Richard Arnold fully supports Butts decision to go condom only and hopes that he spearheads a movement that will resonate throughout the industry.
“This is a direction that the industry will have to go in because the government will attempt to regulate us if we don’t – we need to be pro-active and go for it,” Arnold says. “I honestly think that Seymore has been at the forefront of the business for many years and people look up to him. Hopefully we’re showing that we lead by example.”
And for those performers that choose not to adhere to his new rule, Butts has some alternate methods of earning a paycheck for them.
“I’m thinking of starting a line of videos that document real-life games of Russian Roulette,” Butts says. “I’ll pay each performer $2000 every time they pull the trigger and live. That’s better than most anal scenes pay.”
