(LAS VEGAS, NV) — Adult film studios Evil Angel Productions and Wicked Pictures took home the most trophies at the 21st annual 2004 AVN Awards ceremony Saturday night (January 10) with each company accepting 14 awards.
The high energy, fast paced evening was co-hosted by Vivid contract performer Jenna Jameson with comedian Jim Norton (with Norton getting lots of laughs for one-liners like his claim that he couldn’t get laid in a whorehouse “With chloroform and a blank check”). The Awards, called “The Oscars of adult” by Entertainment Weekly, are given to the best in the adult business by Adult Video News, the leading information source for the adult business.
Among winners of the coveted Lucite statues, were Paul Thomas, honored as Best Director – Film for his work on the year’s Best Film, Vivid’s Heart of Darkness (which won a total of five Awards). Wicked Pictures contract girl Stormy took home the coveted Best New Starlet prize, while Ashley Blue won Female Performer of the Year. Ben English won Best Male Newcomer.
Director John Stagliano accepted the award for the Top Renting Tape of 2003 and for Best DVD for last year’s top winner in every category it was nominated in, the Fashionistas and Hustler founder Larry Flynt accepted the Top Selling Tape of 2003 award for Hustlaz: Diary of a Pimp to the immediate ovation of the crowd at the show, held this year in the Venetian Hotel.
“We should not be repressing sex, we should be celebrating it,” Flynt said as he thanked AVN “For bringing the porn industry out of the gutter.”
Evil Angel’s largest winner of the night, director Jules Jordan took home six awards, thanking his performers and Stagliano for giving him “a chance.”
Wicked’s major victories were split between Best Sex Comedy winner Space Nuts with six and – Best Video Feature winner Beautiful with four (tied with Adam & Eve’s Rawhide).
As Male Performer of the Year winner Michael Stefano accepted his award, he thanked Red Light District, Platinum X Pictures and “all the beautiful women I have had sex with over the past six years.
The evening closed with the drama Heart of Darkness winning Best Film. Vivid partner and co-founder Steven Hirsch brought all of the Vivid Girls on stage, saying that the award was not merely for the film but for “The year’s worth of hard work”
