(CHATSWORTH, CA) — Trend in new DVD versions of old adult video classics is fueled by nostalgia and younger viewers, says AVN in December ’03 Issue. The XXX video tapes that fed the burgeoning home VCR boom of the 1980s – titles like “Debbie does Dallas” and “Behind the Green Door” – are enjoying a new life cycle as DVDs, according to AVN, the authority on adult entertainment.
“The digital video disc has opened up a whole new market for what at least some believe are still the finest examples of erotic cinema – movies shot by filmmakers before video cameras opened the door to the amateurs,” writes Jared Rutter in the lead story of the December 2003 issue of AVN, which is titled: “Classic Porn on DVD: Good for Lots of Things Besides the Obvious.”
Feeding the boom in DVD versions of the classics are nostalgia “from buyers who remember this stuff first-hand” plus the need for “starter kits” of adult classics being purchased by younger viewers (because “someone turns 18 every day”) and the necessity for video stores to offer a full line of product in DVD.
Among the early porn stars and films enjoying a new life in DVD are Marilyn Chambers in “Resurrection of Eve” and “Behind the Green Door,” Gloria Leonard in “The Opening of Misty Beethoven,” Linda Lovelace in “Deep Throat,” Kay Parker in “Kate and the Indians,” Bambi Woods in “Debbie does Dallas” and Georgina Spelvin in “The Devil in Miss Jones.”
“What really distinguishes the ’70s movies and sets them forever apart from those later years were qualities of spirit, carried over from the rebellious 1960s: impertinence, insouciance, humor (sometimes even wit) and a rambunctious, all-consuming, mostly joyful sexuality,” Rutter writes. “Behind the patchy technical quality exists a brave old world of still-vibrant erotic entertainment.”
