(CHATSWORTH, CA) — New XXX-Technologies are Again set To Drive Changes in Consumer Electronics – Like Full Length DVD-Quality Flicks
Just as the XXX adult industry led the VCR revolution, it is again on the cutting edge of the latest Internet technology, according to AVN, the authoritative information resource for the adult entertainment business. In a special issue devoted to “The Changing Face of Adult,” AVN reports that refinements in video on demand (Vod) technology are making it possible for consumers “to watch clips, trailers and even entire features right in the privacy of their own home.”
A new technology from DivXNetworks “allows for near-DVD quality, full-screen, full-motion video, which is a great leap from the pixilated images of only a couple of years ago, making it a much more attractive option.” Says AVN: “The next step may be for consumers to download titles themselves and burn them to their own DVDs – of, or near, the same quality of the discs currently available commercially. The first DVD players that are DivX-enabled are already on shelves, and soon virtually all players will be compatible.”
The role of the adult industry in driving technological advances has been recognized since 1994, when John Tierney wrote a milestone article in the New York Times on the phenomenon entitled: “Porn: The Low Slung Engine of Progress.” (Page 46)
Women, not Girls, Coming Back in Style as Adult Performers
Another new trend identified by AVN in its October issue is the re-emergence of older porn stars. With the headline “And Here’s to you, Mrs. Robinson: Women, not Girls, Coming Back in Style,” AVN points to the return of seasoned performers such as Nina Hartley, Asia Carrera, Rebecca Bardoux, Carolyn Monroe, Papillon and Montana Gunn (all in their 30s and even 40s). The phenomenon highlights “The fact that the porn world is accepting that 30 can be sexy, and it’s not a specialty act.” Says porn star Francesca Le’, now 32, “I think I was good when I was 23 as a performer, but I like to have sex a lot more now than I did then.” (Page 74)
Can Porn Get any Nastier?
AVN also explores the trend toward ever-more explicit hard-core adult films. “I think it’s gone to its limit legally and maybe physically,” says director/performer Francesca Le’, adding, “I don’t know how much more a person can take.” Writer Acme Anderson reports that “despite the Bush administration’s apparent efforts to turn back the clock to a kinder, gentler XXX era, hardcore will continue to get even harder.” (Pg. 42).
