(CHATSWORTH, CA) — If you’ve ever dreamed of getting into the adult entertainment business, the current issue of AVN magazine will provide you with a step-by-step guide that’s as good as a graduate business school curriculum. The September issue of AVN – the authoritative information resource for the adult industry – is dedicated to “The Psychology of Selling: From Concept to Execution, Packaging to Marketing.”
The AVN coverage is designed to help “You to cash in on what the mainstream media is calling ‘the fastest growing emerging industry in America.'” Among the tips: Be prepared to go beyond the “solo male” and market your erotic flicks to couples, females and college-age students.
Adult studios are actively courting the hip, college-aged market with their Animal House-brand of porn shenanigans, getting the attention of the arguably un-hip Bill O’Reilly in the process,” AVN reports. Smart adult studios don’t “just try to appeal to 18-35 year old men, but to the elusive female porn consumer in that age bracket as well.” Among the important elements are decisions on which stars will appeal to other women, “And if that’s going to make the female viewer at home comfortable.”
The amount of sophisticated art direction and production value that go into a good porno are also key elements: “The fantasy is all about getting someone to believe what’s happening on-screen, and art direction goes a long way toward that. Not just set design and production design, but wardrobe and everything,” award-winning adult director Michael Raven told AVN.
For potential porn kings or queens who do not want to go into the film side of the industry, AVN includes a section on adult novelty items called, “Even Grownups Need Toys.” Again, marketing to women is a major part of this segment of the business. “Our packaging for products such as vibrators has become more female-oriented, with cleaner, prettier looking designs,” according to Jennifer O’Gorman, marketing manger for Topco Sales.
The AVN report includes a section on marketing to the gay community and a special takeout on its cover girl for the issue, Gina Lynn, who “Has emerged as one of the most marketable performers in adult.” She admits she “still gets butterflies before a porn shot. I’m worrying about doing a sex scene and my dialogue.”
