(LOS ANGELES, CA) — Skateboarding may not be a crime, but it sure as hell has its outlaws. For proof, stick these two classic skate films into your DVD player, strap yourself in, and get ready to get blown away.
These movies–now conveniently packaged together for the first time– are perhaps the best skate flicks of all-time. Why? You might ask. It’s simply because they’re more than mere skate films–they have stories, stunts, attitude, humor, and hot chicks (Really, what more in life do you need?) They’re kind of like “Jackass,” but with more talent, Jack, and less ass, that is if you don’t count the fine backsides of the Vivid Girls in “The End,” and the busting-out-all-over Minka and stunning Rachel Sterling in “Destroying America.”
As legendary skate rat Jeremy Klein, who stars in and co-wrote both films, explains, “They have a lot of elements that aren’t in normal skateboard videos. Porn stars, monkeys, and explosions. We wanted to make something that people other than skateboards could watch, too.”
Birdhouse Skateboards’ “The End” was the first out of the gate, and immediately won acclaim. In fact, some staffers of TransWorld SKATEboarding voted it the best skate video of 1998. But accolades alone don’t make it a classic, the fans do, and they made it the best-selling skate video of all time.
And, just in case you need to be reminded that pro skaters live large, there’s the Vivid Girls segment in which hotties such as Janine, Tia Bella, Kobe Tai, and Heather Hunter tend to just about every one of our skate heroes’ needs in the skimpiest French maid outfits. In fact, you’ll even see the babes handling our boys’ sticks and tightening some nuts.
“We just wanted to have some hot bitches in our scenes,” Klein says. “We kept trying to find girls, but it just wasn’t working out, so we ended up going with the Vivid Girls. They were really good at what they did when they wanted to do it, but they were actually total bitches to work with, but we got the scenes. Normally they get paid $1,000 to get fucked all day, and with this they got $1,000 to sit around all day, and they were lame about it. I can’t imagine how they act when they’re getting fucked all day.”
As if that weren’t enough, “The End” comes to an explosive climax in Tijuana bullring with skate legend Tony Hawk pulling off bionic airs and a loop-the-loop crosscut with scenes of actual bull fighting. Without giving away too much, the session leaves Hawk and the viewers completely blown away.
One-upping “The End” may have seemed impossible at one time, but Klein in company managed to do just that on Hook-Ups’ “Destroying America.” Don’t let the title fool you, there’s no political agenda here other than plain, old-fashioned, skateboardin’, punk rockin’, gangsta rappin’ anarchy. As Klein explains, the title may now be misconstrued as something completely different in the post-9/11 US of A.2
“I am concerned about that,” he says. “We didn’t mean it that way and it has nothing to do with people trying to ruin our country. If it came out now, I never would have named it that, now that we’ve got these pricks trying to fuck up our country.”
But like “The End,” there is so much more. “ChiPs” star Erik Estrada returns to the small screen in a Ponch-like role as a cop with a bad attitude out to shut down Heath Kirchart and Klein’s skate sessions. “His kids are really into skateboarding, so it was really easy to get him, and he was really cool to work with. We just wanted to get a cop in there, so we kind of threw that it out there as a joke.”
You can get all the explosive action of “The End” and “Destroying America” together at last for a mere 20 bucks. Don’t blow it.
