On June 28, 1776, the Declaration of Independence, written by Thomas Jefferson, was presented to the representatives of the 13 American Colonies; it was ratified on the evening of July 4.
Ironically, Jefferson, a slaveholder himself, included a condemnation of slave importation in the first draft. Georgia and South Carolina objected and the provision was stricken.
Grievances against the ruling monarchy of England constituted most of the document, yet a handful of simple, yet brilliant introductory words became the most famous:
“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”
