(CHATSWORTH, CA) — A new phenomenon known as Reality Porn has emerged as the hottest trend in adult filmmaking in an industry never shy about mimicking mainstream culture, according to Adult Video News (AVN), the industry trade magazine. The new genre of videos typically features porn stars or ordinary people having sex in public venues.
"New Reality Porn productions seemingly pop up every day," writes AVN’ Associate Editor Dan Miller in the May issue. Examples include adult star Jewel De’Nyle’s Porn Star Idol production for Platinum X Pictures, a XXX takeoff of MTV Cribs, called Adult Stars at Home, distributed by Adam & Eve, the highly rated Playboy TV show 7 Lives Xposed and the heavily promoted Showtime network series Family Business based on the life of Adam Glasser, better known as porn producer Seymore Butts.
AVN notes that Fisher Films and Playboy recently followed Jenna Jameson at the Jenna Jameson Strippers Ball at the Sapphire Gentlemen’s Club in Las Vegas and will turn the footage into a raucous reality video, while Simon Wolf Productions is attached to Reel Joe, a sexually explicit Big Brother takeoff.
"But perhaps no one has cornered the exploding Reality Porn market quite like Shane’s World Studios," according to the article. Shane’s World Studios produced controversial sex videos shot at Arizona State and Indiana universities. "Outraged administrators at both schools launched separate investigations which, in turn, generated a ton of mainstream press for Shane’s World, which in turn translated into big" video sales, Miller writes.
Shane’s World Studios’ co-owner Jennie Grant tells AVN that the videos "make sex fun, instead of just showing porn stars having fun, we’re showing real people with the porn stars. Sex shouldn’t be a big deal and doing it on video shouldn’t be a big deal."
John (Buttman) Stagliano, a male porn star turned multiple AVN Award winning director who has distributed through Evil Angel Video the DreamGirls line and produced and directed Buttman at Nudes a Poppin’ as well as hundreds of adult videos, says reality-based product will always have a place in the adult film business. "Girls who are doing this are making a bold exhibitionist statement, trying to show how sexy they can be," Stagliano told AVN. "They are looking for approval. It’s very real as opposed to the contrived scenarios. It takes courage for them to do that stuff. They’re not getting paid."
The new genre seems to be particularly appealing to some porn stars, including former Vivid contract actress Sky, who returned to adult video after a two year hiatus to appear in Dirty Werks’ Reality Porn videos. "I’m not going to act like a fake bimbo," Sky tells AVN. "It’s going to be how I want to f***, when I want to f*** and who I want to f***."
Miller says AVN will continue to cover the Reality Porn phenomenon with updates on AVN.com and in a new section of the magazine titled "Reality Check."
