(ATLANTA, GA) — NBA Activities Take over Atlanta – The 2003 NBA All Star Game Weekend wrapped up Sunday night with the All Star Game itself, but surprisingly enough it wasn’t the event of the weekend.
While basketball was on the minds of the players and those directly involved with the game related activities the parties made most of the headlines and were the focus of many of the discussions in and around Metro Atlanta. With over 200 different events to choose from, there was something for everyone. 65,000 people were expected to take in at least one event, and many of that number will be people coming in from out of town.
Two of the major parties generating interest were the Player’s Ball held at Mirage in Atlanta, and the All Star Freek Fest held at the 20 Grand Club in College park. The Player’s Ball had been the focus of several articles in the Atlanta Journal Constitution and local news stations. Those not familiar with the past Player’s Balls made news by saying real pimps would be in attendance doing business. It took until later in the week when many discovered it was a party and fashion show that encouraged attendees to dress up pimp-style. The bad publicity and picket lines didn’t keep an overflow crowd away, and many tried getting in until the early hours of the morning.
The Freek Fest ended up being a little more low-key. Music played, people danced, several vendors set up shop including a modeling agency looking for potential models. A group of dancers from Miami disappointed they couldn’t “take anything off” because of local ordinances still entertained. Heather Hunter, one of the most famous black pornstars and Black Tail Magazine helped in promoting the event.
