(MEXICO CITY, MEXICO) — A Mexican film about a priest who seduces a 16-year-old girl has set a box-office record, despite – or perhaps thanks to – calls by Catholic bishops and conservative politicians to boycott the film.
"El Crimen del Padre Amaro" (The Crime of Father Amaro), starring Mexican actor Gael Garcia, took in $11.86 million (7.4 million pounds) in the 20 days since it opened August 16 in 400 theatres across the country, according to its distributor Columbia Pictures Mexico.
