(CINCINNATI, OH) — The National Coalition for the Protection of Children & Families and the Religious Alliance Against Pornography (RAAP) have launched a petition to persuade AT&T and Comcast Corporation to get out and stay out of the pornography business.
Rick Schatz, president and CEO of the National Coalition said that the two groups launched the "Fight Corporate Porn" petition, which can be signed online at NationalCoalition.org/petition.phtml, after several meetings and correspondence with the leaders of AT&T and Comcast did not persuade the companies to decide against distributing pornography through the cable operations of AT&T Comcast, the corporation to be formed when AT&T merges its broadband business with Comcast Corporation.
"Despite the profitability of this part of the cable business, we hope to show them that pornography is bad for business and for their corporate reputations," Schatz asserted.
AT&T is on the verge of selling its broadband business, including its cable service that distributes soft- and hard-core pornography through the Playboy Channel and the Hot Network, to its shareholders and then merging it with Comcast Corporation. This will technically get AT&T out of the pornography business, but will form an extremely strong corporation with more than 22 million cable customers nationally.
However, Schatz feels that AT&T is still supporting the pornography industry by keeping its name attached to the corporation that will continue to offer the Playboy Channel, Hot Network and other pornographic programming and urges concerned citizens to tell these "porn-promoting" corporations that their actions are "morally and socially irresponsible."
In addition to circulating the "Fight Corporate Porn" petition, the National Coalition and RAAP hope that those who wish to stop the mainstreaming of pornography will write letters to Michael Armstrong, Chairman and CEO of AT&T, and Bryan Roberts, CEO of Comcast Corporation, expressing their anger and disappointment.
