(PALM SPRINGS, CA) — Construction is starting this week on a nudist resort’s $5 million expansion plan that includes a footbridge so naked guests can cross a busy street.

Stephen Payne calls his Desert Shadows Inn Resort & Villas a “family hotel” where swimsuits are banned in the swimming pool and spa. The resort already includes 59 condos, 33 hotel rooms, tennis courts and a spa, and the nudists-only footbridge will connect them to 11 additional condos.

“Anything goes,” said Jacquii Gottlieb, whose husband’s accountancy office adjoins the proposed expansion. “We are totally for it. It’s hot here, anyway. Who needs clothes?”

The city Planning Commission had rejected the bridge because members felt they might set a bad precedent by allowing Palm Springs’ first elevated walkway.

But the City Council unanimously approved the proposal, which calls for 5-foot-high walls that will shield nudists from street-level gawkers 18 feet below.

Palm Springs is 110 miles east of Los Angeles.
