Chinese scientists have come up with an apparently fail-safe way to save the rare panda from extinction.
But getting the pandas to co-operate is proving a problem.
The mass-circulation Beijing Youth Daily reports scientists are giving male pandas experimental doses of the drug Viagra to help boost their sex drive.
Panda numbers have been in steep decline across China in recent years due to problems ranging from habitat loss to the bears’ low libido.
Traditional herbal medicines and aphrodisiacs had done little to help the bears’ perform, the report said, because most only mate for 15 seconds at a time, and many do not know what to do.
One researcher says while drugs helped the panda’s sex drive, they had also become temperamental and regularly attacked their partners.
