In honor of National Condom Week (Feb. 14-21) and Valentine’s Day, vive la difference! is beginning a series of free mother-daughter safer sex workshops in the public libraries of Los Angeles. The first workshop is scheduled for Feb. 19 at the Los Feliz Branch in east Hollywood.

Cherie Magnus, founder and owner, said, “We had to come up with something to make the purchasing of protection easier and less embarrassing for teenagers and women. But we also believe that knowledge is power. So these free workshops are part of our mission as well.”
Although the company is self-funded, Magnus believes that the time and materials given to educate women about the risks of sexual activity are worth it. With mothers accompanying their daughters, there will be less fear, and everyone can learn something.
“In this town, shop and bar owners in West Hollywood (a city known for its high incidences of AIDS cases) feel it’s depressing to display bowls of donated free condoms in their establishments,” said Magnus, a former librarian. “Education has to start somewhere, and what better place than the library? Maybe we can also have workshops for those West Hollywood businessmen!”
